The warmer weather has finally arrived and with it comes less layers of clothing and even boob-tube dresses and off-the-shoulder tops. But where do you even start with trying to find a strapless bra that will give you both the support you need and a great shape that will compliment your body and the outfit you’re wearing? Read on as we uncover what to look for in a good-fitting strapless that even bustier ladies will find useful…

Strapless bras are definitely a must-have lingerie wardrobe essential, especially in a climate like ours. However, it is important to mention that a strapless bra is never going to be as comfortable as an everyday bra. Remember that all the weight of the breast is now pushing down, so the underwire will start to dig in under the breast, especially with a heavy bust, so as fabulous as you’re going to look in that strapless dress, be prepared by the end of the evening to be more than ready to take it off.

Another nugget of advice we like to impart to our clients with wearing a strapless bra is to avoid wearing it too many days in a row.  As much as the silicone elastic is dermatologically tested, wearing one’s strapless bra too often could lead to heat and perspiration-induced skin irritation, as the skin doesn’t get enough of a chance to breathe with silicone elastics.

Speaking of, a good quality strapless bra will always have silicone elastics to provide that extra support and anchorage.  Also, as you go bigger in the back and/or cup, so you will find that the back strap will get wider to provide more stability.  Another feature of a good quality strapless bra is that it will come with its own set of detachable shoulder straps, making it a ‘multiway’ bra. So, for instance, if you have a halter-neck top or dress, you can take one shoulder strap, extend it to its fullest, hook it in the front, put it around your neck and fasten in the front on the other side, providing you with a little more support.

When fitting a strapless bra, be sure that your back strap is firm – when you pull the back strap away from your body, you shouldn’t be able to pull it more than 5cm – if you can pull it more than that, it’s an indication that the back strap is probably too big, meaning that the weight of the breasts is going to pull the back strap down throughout your wear.

The next thing you’ll want to ensure is that the breasts are fully enclosed in the cups. No-one likes that unsightly bulge at the top of the cups. Stand in front of the mirror with your arms by your side and check that there is no breast bulge by your armpit.

One size certainly does not fit all when it comes to bras, and this couldn’t be more true than with a strapless.
